You’re new to social media or maybe you’ve been here before and you’re a little frustrated that no one is listening. You weren’t discovered on YouTube and have now instantly become every teenage girl’s crush. Nope. However, you think that tweet about your above average cooking skills should have gotten some love.

On election night, a single picture quoted “four more years” broke a social media record once held by the aforementioned teenage heart throb. It’s unlikely that your tweets will enjoy that level of popularity. However, don’t just give up yet. You don’t need to be elected into the White House or produce a few catchy singles to make sure your audience listens. You just have to know how to play the same game.

The key to viral social media content is to keep it short and sweet. Don’t give away too much information. The purpose of a tweet or a Facebook post is to lead the audience somewhere. Focus on creating a catchy, creative pitch that will make the audience want to click on your link and be lead down a rabbit hole into wonderland where they’ll be lost forever in all you have to offer. This message is the hook. If you learn to hook them, they’ll come back for more.

While you’re off creating your amazing content, be sure to also place restrictions and share only what’s relevant. Also, don’t spam your audience with your messages. This will make them run faster than a pack of bulls. Think about how you like to be treated within the social sphere and what content excites you and your audience. While the social media timeline does move fast, only share your message at a maximum of three times and don’t hog up valuable real estate on a Facebook news feed.

Take time and listen to your audience. You know that friend who talks about themselves? Yeah, you could be that person on social media. Nobody likes an egoist. If someone asks you a question, mentions you on Twitter, or posts a comment on your Facebook wall, be sure to respond back and engage with your audience. They want to know that you’re human and care about what they’re sharing with you.
