If you write a great blog post, but no one reads it, did that post ever really exist? When it comes to writing that awesome blog post, creating it is a small (but important) part of the equation. It’s what happens after you publish it, that creates the magic. The challenge is getting people to read it. But how?

If you’re not promoting your blog post, you’re taking the chance that someone might automatically stumble upon it. Highly unlikely but stranger things have happened. Promotion starts with having a consistent strategy. It’s a fine blend of social media, bookmarking platforms, personal contacts, and other syndicating sites.

Social media is a great place is start with promotion. Actually, it should be the first place you start. Once you’ve written your magnum opus of a blog post, you should let the whole world know you’ve written something and what better place than a social sharing platform that encourages sharing. Facebook gives you the ability to share on your personal pages and/or a business page. You can also promote your post for $7 or go even further with a Facebook ad depending on how strongly you feel about this blog post. After targeting your Facebook audience, set up a strategy on Twitter. Since the Twitter timeline moves much faster, be sure to tweet or schedule your blog post at least 2-3 times in a day for the next 30 days and change the title. Don’t just stop at Facebook and Twitter, make sure you also pin your blog post on Pinterest. Create a board specifically for your blog and draw your audience to that board and your Pinterest site in general. Last but not least, share your blog post on Google+. Despite what people think, Google+ is not a ghost town. It’s actually a rich SEO source and you can choose to share this post with your private circles or the public.

After you’ve shared your blog post on all your social platforms, don’t forget to bookmark that legacy of yours. You should have accounts on StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit, Delicious, and Technorati. They each have one thing in common – to help others find your blog post. To make your strategy successful here, be sure your posts are tagged and categorized properly. If you don’t take this important step, your blog post won’t be found in searches on these sites.

After sharing and bookmarking, be sure to share that blog post with your inner circle and network. Add a link to your blog in your email signature, share the blog with any groups that you belong to (as long as the group has the same interest as your subject material), send an email to close friends about your blog post, and set up an RSS feed button on your blog to encourage subscriptions.

You can also get exposure for your blog by reading other blogs. After all, there are other blogs out there, not just yours and we all need a little love. Almost all blogs have a commenting system that allows you to drop a link. Hello! Free advertising for your blog while doing something nice for something else. It’s a win/win and doesn’t take long.

If you really want to think outside the box a bit, consider submitting your blog to Amazon via their Kindle Publishing program, you can get paid when readers download your blog post to read on their Kindle e-reader. You can also submit your blog to Networked Blogs which links to Facebook and drives traffic and readers to your blog.
